The Guo Technique and the Innovation of the Procedure

The Guo Technique was born from a unique blend of medical training, innovation, family collaboration and a desire to revolutionize the traditional surgical procedure for treating carpal tunnel syndrome.

Raised in China by a surgeon father who led a major hospital, the Guo brothers grew up immersed in medicine. Their paths later diverged – one earning a PhD in materials science in the U.S., while brothers Danzhu and Danqing became physicians specializing in pain management and rehabilitation with orthopedic expertise.

While practicing in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Danzhu and Danqing saw a need for a less invasive solution to carpal tunnel syndrome. The brothers developed a new approach, inspired by a simple childhood memory – cutting tofu with a thread – and guided by modern ultrasound technology.

In 2015, they introduced Thread Carpal Tunnel Release, more commonly known as the Guo Technique.

This minimally invasive procedure uses ultrasound guidance and a fine thread inserted through two small needle punctures to release the ligament causing pressure on the median nerve. The result is often immediate relief, with minimal discomfort and a rapid return to normal hand use – sometimes the same day.

Today, the Guo Technique is performed at leading institutions, including the Mayo Clinic®, and continues to expand through physician training and ongoing research supporting its safety and effectiveness.

Dr. Danzhu Guo often looks back with pride on the development of this revolutionary technique: “From a small Midwest clinic, three brothers and one thread have restored thousands of hands.”

It’s a tale of family ingenuity and compassionate innovation, now easing carpal tunnel pain globally, one thread at a time.
